How to compare fence quotes without missing the expensive details

Two fence quotes can describe the same length and still buy very different work.

Wood privacy fence and garden gate with planting

Two fence quotes can describe the same length and still buy very different work. Gates, removal, post details and site access often explain more than the headline total.

Count gates and corners, not just feet

Sketch the proposed line and mark each gate, corner and change in height. Note whether a mower, trailer or future contractor needs to pass through. Give the same sketch to every installer and ask them to verify measurements on site. An extra access gate is easier to plan before the posts are installed.

Ask what happens below ground

The visible panel is only part of the installation. Ask the contractor to explain the specified posts, installation method and suitability for the conditions on your property. Confirm who checks the property line and how underground utilities will be located. Avoid treating an old fence as proof of a legal boundary.

Read the removal and warranty lines

A quote should say whether old materials leave the property, how disturbed areas are restored and what happens if a gate needs adjustment. Separate product warranties from workmanship coverage. Get the exclusions in writing and compare the same fence style and hardware before deciding one installer is better value.

Put it into practice

  • Use a measured sketch.
  • Specify gate width and hardware.
  • Include removal, restoration and warranty terms.
