A leaning section does not automatically mean the entire fence is finished. Look at the pattern of damage before paying for a whole new boundary.
Look for a pattern
Walk both sides where you have permission. Note loose panels, damaged posts, dragging gates and recurring wet areas. Take photos without pulling apart unstable sections. Several sound runs with one damaged corner suggest a different conversation from a fence with widespread deterioration.
Request two clearly defined options
Ask for a repair scope and a replacement scope when both are realistic. A repair estimate should identify the sections and components that will change, how new work will meet old work and what appearance differences to expect. Do not assume a small repair carries the same warranty as a complete installation.
Plan the next use of the yard
If a patio, pool or large delivery is coming, tell the fence installer now. A removable section or better-positioned gate may save future disruption. Compare the useful life and inconvenience of each option, while accepting that a contractor may need an on-site inspection before recommending either.
Put it into practice
- Photograph each problem section.
- Ask whether sound posts can remain.
- Discuss future access before setting the new line.
